Tile terminology can be confusing.  There are 2 types of glazed tiles, porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles are made of white sand. Ceramic tiles are made of red clay. Both porcelain and ceramic tiles have a PEI rating of 0 to 5.

 

CERAMIC TILE:

Majority of the time ceramic tile has a red clay backing and has a durable glazed finish. The glaze can range from matte, satin and gloss. It can be installed on floor and wall applications. It is suitable for light to moderate traffic areas.

 

PORCELAIN TILE:

Majority of the time porcelain tile has a white backing and has a durable glazed finish. The glaze can range from matte, satin and gloss. It can be installed on floor and wall applications. It is suitable for light to heavy traffic areas.
